You may not recognize the name Phillipa Gregory, but you may recognize her most famous historical novel, The Other Boleyn Girl. When I read it about six years ago, shame on me, I did not really know the full story of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Imagine my shock at the end! I must have been asleep when we learned about British history because when I read it with adult eyes I became obsessed. Obsessed. I already have a crazy infatuation with anything English from years of locking myself away and reading every Bronte, Austin, Dickinson, Dickens and all the rest that I could get my hands on. I wanted to live on the moors and visit rich aunties in London.
My obsession carried me through the entire 4 seasons of The Tutors on Showtime, which if you have not seen Johnathan Rhys Meyers portrayal, you must! Even if you don’t think you like this genre it is mesmerizing. I must pause and give you a sample.
Right? I’ve watched the entire series twice.
But, back to Phillipa. She is this amazing writer that has literally dissected all the tutors and royalty in and around the time of Henry VIII. She’s written books from the perspective of all of his six queens, their panic and some of them their death. She does it in a way that is not dry or boring, rather it is a real life, juicy novel. Again, I love anything to do with the royals. Everything stops in my house when the Duchess of Cambridge makes an appearance on Nightly News and my kids know that there are real princesses out there. For me, I think it is a way to keep what feels like a storybook alive.
These are coming alive on screen as well! The Other Boleyn Girl was turned into a movie as most of you know and her book The White Queen was an amazing Starz series with the gorgeous, Rebecca Ferguson.
I have read all of her novels and am always on the pre-order list for when she comes out with another. If you have not read any of her books, start with The Other Boleyn Girl and if you get the bug, her others are just as good.
