If you open a catalogue or go on your favorite online decor shop these days you will see much of this California Style that I was posting about on Blue Egg Brown Nest last week (see post here). I see it namely in the accessories like the African mud cloth pillows, brass lamps and shag rugs.
Well, like in everything, I think there is a way to do a trend without going overboard, spending a fortune and giving up the items that you love. A trend is a trend and it will come and go and for me, I like to keep the big, expensive casegoods like my couches and tables a basic neutral while allowing myself to play with the accents on and around them. Even if we love a fabric on a pillow, after six years, I think we all want a little bit of a change anyway. Or at least I do! Then again, changing my home up is a fun activity for me and has been since I was little and I used to move around my mission style bedroom furniture every Saturday morning. It creates a fresh and new experience in that space.
I actually think the rustic, farm style that I’ve come to love uses many of the black, brown and white colors that are trending. My kitchen is white, my seating area is white, my couches are brown. So, if I want to incorporate this relaxed and interesting look it’s really about the details.
I looked a many pictures and what I saw was that the rooms were very edited down. That means the clutter was gone, but objects still exist in a deliberate form. I’m all for that. Rooms were white. It was almost like a camera filter on the room. Here are some of the inspirational pictures I looked at.
It’s still simple and clean.
Here are some images of where I am with my own family room. I’m only going to switch up this room. It leads into my great room/kitchen which is simple and black and white already. I’m not going to go total global, but I do have some more pillows coming that are black and brown. I am also upholstering two chairs in a light Sunbrella with ottomans. Here’s what I have so far.
